What is Beard Mustache Transplantation?

The most important facial accessories for men are beard and moustache. When beards and mustaches do not grow as often or not at all due to various reasons, it can cause a lack of self-confidence and some social problems in individuals. The most effective solution for people whose beard and mustache do not grow or are sparse is beard and mustache transplantation.

Transplantation is the best and most effective method in the treatment of beard and mustache loss or sparseness, which occurs due to many reasons such as various diseases, scars and burn scars, genetic and hormonal reasons (especially testosterone, the male hormone, being below normal in the body).

In recent years, with the developing technology and the availability of painless methods, hair transplantation has become widespread, and the painless and successful use of the same methods in beard and mustache transplantation has increased the interest of many men in beard and mustache transplantation.

How is Beard and Mustache Transplantation done?

In our office, beard and mustache transplantation is performed with the FUE (Follicular Unite Extraction) technique, which is the most widely used method worldwide. Hair follicles are collected one by one from the nape, neck, under the chin and cheekbone, or from another part of the body deemed appropriate by the physician, and transplanted to the area to be transplanted to obtain the desired hair density.

Before the transplantation, the area where the roots will be taken is determined for each patient who is deemed suitable and approved after a detailed examination by the physician. Again, depending on the physician’s preference and the patient’s condition, the area where the roots will be removed is shaved or the procedure begins without shaving. Afterwards, local anesthesia is applied. When starting the FUE technique, the roots, loosened by a micro motor, are removed using a tweezer-like medical tool called micropunch.

When the root collection process is completed, thin channels are opened with a Sapphire Blade in the beard or mustache area where the crop will be transplanted, and the roots are transplanted at an angle towards the direction of hair growth. This results in a much more natural looking result. The area to be transplanted varies from person to person due to sparse appearance or regional shedding. Although it is possible to use other beard and hair follicles in the facial area as donor areas, grafts taken from the nape area are generally preferred in hair and mustache transplantation.

What should be taken into consideration before beard and mustache transplantation?

Before beard and mustache transplantation, the doctor performs a detailed examination and performs various blood tests to check the patient’s health status and suitability for the procedure. Then, the beard or mustache area where the procedure will be performed is examined in detail. By checking the area where both mustache and beard are located, it is determined how many hair follicles are required. The number of hair follicles is different for each patient, and the transplantation process is performed based on different criteria such as the person’s wishes and expectations from the transplantation process, sparse or non-existent beard and moustache, whether there is a roughness or not, and facial structure.

If the patient uses regular medication, the physician should be informed about this before the operation and no medication should be taken on the day of the procedure without consulting the physician. Medicines that increase the risk of bleeding, especially during the transplantation process (blood thinners or herbal medicine supplements such as ginseng and ginko that have the same effect), should not be used in order to complete the operation in a healthy way.

No cream, lotion or chemical-containing products should be applied to the face area. If the patient has a beard or moustache, it should never be cut, shortened or shaved. After the analyzes performed on the day of the operation, it is shortened in the office environment if deemed necessary by the physician.

What is the process after beard and mustache transplantation?

Since beard and mustache transplantation is performed under local anesthesia, it is completely painless. The procedure takes approximately 4-6 hours on average; Slight crusting may be seen in the transplanted area the next day, but it disappears in a short time. During the transplantation process, redness may occur in these areas due to blood coming out of the small holes opened by the micropunch tips on the face and clotting. This situation is completely normal; Redness provides better nutrition and development of hair follicles.

The hairs at the ends of the roots in the transplanted area may fall out after 15 days. This is a normal process. After about three months, the hairs start to grow again. Beards and mustaches reach the desired size in an average of 6 to 8 months.

What should be taken into consideration after beard and mustache transplantation?

While the area made after the transplantation process is left open; The donor area from which the hair follicles are taken is bandaged for 2-3 days. After the transplantation, the facial area should not be washed for 2-3 days. It is important that the person sleeps on his back the first night after the procedure. Additionally, you should not wear tight-fitting clothes that will rub against the hair follicles when changed. The first shave after beard and mustache transplantation should be done 10-12 days later. It is very important to comply with this period in order to keep the roots intact. After completing this period, beard and mustache can be trimmed with a shaver or razor.
